The Ten Commitments of the
Saint Joseph's University
Student-Athlete
One: To Academics
I am a student first and primary, an athlete second. Two: To Mission and Purpose
I will work to be aware of, learn, reflect and promote the mission and purpose of the university, department and the team. Three: To Honesty and Integrity I will respect my athletic community and myself by playing hard and fair, with honest, intensity, compassion, care and uprightness. I will not jeopardize my own or my team's integrity by gambling, cheating or becoming involved in any activity that is not of the utmost integrity. Four: To respect Self and Others I pledge to use only legal and approved means to develop myself, both mentally and physical. I will not participate in initiation practices, (i.e. hazing) that will harm someone mentally (humiliation) or physically. I will not use legal or illegal drug improperly. Five: To Service I will use my physical gifts to better the lives of others. I will work beyond the game to create opportunities and level playing fields for the under-resourced in all of life's arenas, whenever possible. Six: To Personal and Spiritual Development I will strive to appreciate that there is a greater power at work in my life that is greater than the game and I. I will reflect on the transcendent power at work in my life and find time to reflect and to understand the influence of this power, God, in my being. Seven: To value the Sport/Game I will respect my teammates, coaches, trainer, academic advisors, fans family and those of my opponents. I will respect my opponents and be grateful for them in making me a better player. I will respect the rules of sport/game and those entrusted to enforce them. I will be at every practice, on time and work to improve myself at all times. I will play to win yet, not at the expense of compromising others or myself. Eight: To Respect the History of the Sport/Game
Through my play, I will acknowledge those who have come before me and have sacrificed and worked to provide the opportunities afforded to me. I will value those upon whose shoulders the game and this university is built.
Nine: To Loyalty I will be loyal to myself, my family, healthy relationships, God, teammates, coaches, staff, and the university and, I will adhere to all of the various rules, regulations, policies and codes of behavior of these groups. I will conduct myself in a manner that recognizes the need for my own development and the enhancement of the individual and the common good, the community. Ten: To Life In all that I do, before, during and after the game, I will value and honor the gift of life. I will do this by recognizing the negative results and consequences of violence, physical and verbal abuse and self-aggrandizement. I will only do that which will work to make me a better person. |
