Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse

Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse, the on-campus home of the Hawks, was named for the Saint Joseph's graduates who gave their lives in World War II. The building was officially dedicated on November 11, 1949 and two weeks later, played host to its first basketball game, a 62-46 loss to Rhode Island on November 26. Following that initial setback, SJU would go on to win the next 23 games in the friendly confines of the Fieldhouse. Overall, the Hawks have compiled an impressive 305-76 record (80.0 winning percentage) on Hawk Hill. Among the highlights of the Hawks' homecourt advantage was a 34-game winning streak from the late 1950's to the early 1960's, an 11-0 record in 2000-01 and the unbeaten 11-0 mark as the Hawks made their perfect season run in 2003-04. All told, SJU has had only two losing records in the Fieldhouse over 57 seasons.

Extensive renovations of the facility began in 1987 with new lower level seating and scoreboards. A second phase, featuring a new roof and windows, was completed in 1989. Further work, including a new playing surface, a complete overhaul of the lobby and construction of new media and laundry facilities, was completed in 1990. The basketball lockerroom was rebuilt in 1991.

A historic basketball arena, the 3,200-seat building has hosted 116 sellouts over the last 13 seasons. The excitement in the Fieldhouse was at a fever pitch in 2003-04 as capacity crowds filled the building to watch the Hawks make their historic run. Every game was a sellout, and it marked the second time in school history that the team averaged an attendance of 3,200 for the whole season, with 1997-98 being the other. Since then, the building has also been sold out the past two seasons, 2004-05 and 2005-06. Saint Joseph's hosted three NIT games in the Fieldhouse in 2004-05, with each crowd more enthusiastic than the last, as the Hawks won four games to reach the NIT Final Four in New York City.

The passion of Hawk fans in Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse was recognized by Sports Illustrated (SI.com) in 2003 as one of "The 100 Things You Have to Do Before You Graduate". Ranked 12th was "Go to a Saint Joseph's basketball game and shout 'The Hawk Will Never Die' - - the most defiant cheer in college sports."
