Hawk Men Run to Third Place Finish at Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational
Sept. 29, 2007 The SJU men's cross country team had a solid outing Saturday, finishing third at the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational at the Penn State Blue/White Golf Course. The Hawks finished with a score of 86 points. Columbia took team honors with 26 points and Penn State's Brian Fuller won the 5.2 mile race with a time of 26:39. For the second event in a row, junior Kyle Murray led the Hawk harriers with a seventh-place finish at 27:02. Following up his strong second-place finish at the Ram Invitaional Sept. 15, Murray was the only Saint Joseph's finisher in the top 10. Between the 16th and 29th spots--the rest of the scoring Hawks finished, led by sophomore Jonathan Sclafani (16th/27:45). Close behind Sclafani was freshman Brian Guterl (20th/27:54), sophomore Jimmy Jennings (23rd/28:00), and freshman Ryan Fenimore (29th/28:37). Saint Joseph's spread between its first and fifth runners was 1:35. Junior Brendan Kearney (29:07), and freshmen Jesse Brooks (29:10) and Luke Fischer (29:12 placed 39th, 43rd and 44th, respectively rounding out the sixth to eighth team spots. Others on the Hawk roster who finished at Penn State were Pete Dittmar (59th/29:29), Steve Young (61st/29:32), George Wittmann (62nd/29:32), Chris Savino (69th/29:49), Vince Collins (70th/29:52), Justin Heinze (72nd/29:56), and Kevin Donnelly (103rd/31:56).
The Hawks are next in action at Lafayette's Leopard Invitational, Saturday October 15. It is their final tune-up before the Atlantic 10 Championship at Belmont Plateau, hosted by Saint Joseph's.
