Freshman 8 Defeats Penn in Women's Rowing

March 22, 2008

PHILADELPHIA - Penn won three of four events against Saint Joseph's women's rowing team on Friday in blustery conditions on the Schuylkill River.

The Hawks' only victory cam in the Freshman 8, as that boat remains undefeated in three races thus far in 2008 and continues to make improvements.

The 2nd Varsity 8 was a tremendous race with great efforts from both Penn and SJU. "The 2V race was fun to watch. Two crews just having at eachother -stroke for stroke. There must have been 10 lead changes in the race," said Hawk coach Gerry Quinlan. "Even though Penn came out on top it was a great early season battle."

In the Varsity 8, Penn took control of the race right from the start. "Penn showed a lot of athleticism and poise. We seemed to have the same race plan -get out early and dictate the pace of the race. Penn just executed the plan -we did not," Quinlan said.
