Hawks Fly Past La Salle, 6-1, In Women's Tennis

PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's women's tennis team won eight of nine matches against rival La Salle Tuesday afternoon as the Hawks downed the Explorers, 6-1, at Belfield Courts. Saint Joseph's made easy work of the Explorers in doubles competition as SJU won all three matches to earn the first point of the contest. The Saint Joseph's team of freshman Jennifer Kedzierski and junior Stephania Velazquez earned an 8-1 victory over Joann Lee and Lauren Perry at No. 1 doubles, while Hawks' Gina DiGiacomo and Marisa Donelson downed Rachel Barnhart and Mary Hardiman 8-3 at the second pairing. The SJU team of sophomore Krysta Contino and junior Lauren Kuhmerker earned the sweep of the doubles matches for the Hawks as they downed Martha Kutteh and Krista Benedette 8-2 at No. 3 doubles. In individual competition, Saint Joseph's dominated La Salle, winning five of the six flights. Velazquez was a straight-set winner over Lee at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2, while Kedzierski downed Perry, 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 2 spot. Guers posted a 6-1, 6-3 win over Barnhart at No. 3 single and DiGiacamo earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Hardiman at the No. 4 position. Donelson, playing at No. 6 singles, earned the final point for the Hawks with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Benedette. With the win, the Hawks improve to 6-2 on the season, while La Salle falls to 1-2 on the year with the loss. Saint Joseph's returns to action Friday, September 29, when the Hawks host Lafayette at 3 p.m.
