Saint Joseph's Women's Tennis Downs Mount St. Mary's, 4-3

PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's women's tennis capped the fall portion of its schedule with a 4-3 win over Mount St. Mary's Saturday afternoon at Finnesey Courts. The Hawks, who started the season 1-4, finished strong, going 4-1 over their final five contests to boost their record to 5-5 overall. In a fight for the match's opening point, Mount St. Mary's earned an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles, but the Hawks tied it with an 8-6 victory at No. 3 doubles by the tandem of junior Krysta Contino and freshman Katy Borden. With the first point up for grabs, Saint Joseph's seniors Stephania Velazquez and Lauren Kuhmerker won a tiebreaker 7-3 to earn a crucial 9-8 victory at No. 2 doubles and gave SJU a 1-0 edge. Needing three points in singles play, Velazquez earned SJU's first point with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Kaitlin Hallahan at No. 1 singles, while freshman Margaret Mullaney downed Emily Bolchoz 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 at No. 3 singles to put the Hawks one point away from a win. The Hawks earned the clinching point at No. 4 singles as Kuhmerker posted a straight-set win, 6-2, 6-2, over Emma Haley.
